Ain’t That The Truth!

Blog Post #58

For the life of me, I can’t remember the name, but many years ago my small faith sharing group read a book that clearly outlined the devastation of Satan’s greatest weapon...distraction! For sure, Satan is a jerk of the highest order...but he’s also a mastermind, and he knows how to worm his way into our every waking moment, every human desire, and every single solitary decision! Sad, but true, Satan is as vibrant as ever, and his many distractions are running amuck in our minds and ruining lives.

Distracted, you say? You’re darn right! We’re distracted by virtually everything: what we should be wearing, eating, and doing with our lives...how we can best keep up with the Joneses...what we read, watch, and wonder about...our human desire for comfort and pleasure...others’ expectations...what’s for dinner...the blasted to-do list...how many steps we’ve taken...a speck of dust flying through the air! We’re so distracted, we’ve gotten to a place of being distracted by our distractions!! Good grief!! What a perfect way to weigh down our psyche and our soul!

We’ve clearly forgotten, “The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing!” (Stephen Covey) And the main thing is Jesus and His eternal truths. Stop and internalize that last sentence for just a moment.

We’re on this earth for what...the blink of an eye? The toss of a coin? The clap of your hands? A drip in the ocean? However you want to describe it, it’s equates to a fraction of time. Believe it now or realize it soon enough!

At any rate, what do we do with the time we have left? Specifically, how do we direct our thoughts...especially today, when our thoughts are being bombarded with atrocious international disasters, political strife at every turn, depressing news stories, hurricanes, floods, fires, relational devastation, greed, gore, vanity, pride, and a culture gone amuck? How do we respond to what we see on the news, hear at the coffee shop, read on the internet and watch on our radiation boxes?

I would like to suggest that we keep God’s fundamental truths at the forefront of our minds every minute of every hour of every day!

Keep! God’s! Fundamental! TRUTHS! At! The! Forefront!

What ARE some of those truths? How about one of these: Jesus Christ is the Son of God...the Bible is the inspired and revealed word of God...the Ten Commandments provide a moral compass and ethical standards to live by...the existence of the Holy Trinity is one God in three persons (God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit)...grace is a totally free, unmerited gift from God designed to help us through life...the Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble...God is the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort...the Lord is our light and our salvation, whom shall we fear...God will strengthen us and help us and uphold us with His righteous right hand...God loves us unconditionally and is with us always, to the very end of time...when God is our center, we have no real reason to fear.

Not bad for a pick-me-up...especially when you consider these truths come from the mouth of God!

All I’m really saying in this blog post is to pay attention to where you allow your thoughts to go, and who you trust with real truth. For the Master of truth is very clear and tells us exactly what we should think!

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Keep on doing what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me.” ~ Philippians 4:8,9
