Oh My Gourd

Blog Post #13

Although we are having an Indian summer of sorts, fall is in the air. Or at least it’s in the air I’m breathing in my home after making a trip to Bath and Body Works to stock up on things autumn! Walking into our house, the Vanilla Pumpkin Marshmallow candle assails my senses and makes me want to snuggle into our oversized chair with a mug full of a hot salted caramel mocha coffee and be alone with my thoughts and God. It’s my ideal place and space for a soul tune-up, and yet, life always seems to get in the way.

It’s a problem, and one Mom and I are regularly talking about. Soul time constantly gets shoved into the category of, “if-I-have-time-later” but later consistently gets pushed off to the 12th…of never. In our conversations about how we can change this disturbing trend, Mom and I always circle back to one word, intentionality. If we really believe in God, if we really believe He loves us, wants to have a relationship with us, helps us through life, AND gets our sweet/sorry souls to Heaven, then why on God’s green earth is He our last priority?

The answer is easy. We are running around doing good things. We really are. We are working, going to school, attending events to support people we love, creating meaningful relationships…the list of good works and deeds is endless. But do we just want to be leading good lives or leading lives for God?

The two can certainly coexist, but how are we really leading lives for God if we aren’t checking in with Him, if we aren’t talking to Him, if we aren’t drawing our awareness to all the ways He tells us everyday that He’s proud of us, that He loves us, that He’s right here with us.

That’s why Mom and I want to extend an invitation for you to join us at the Kurivial house, 116 Brown Drive, Bryan, Ohio 43506 to take yourself away from the craziness, pour yourself a cup of coffee, snuggle into the couch, and have some soul time with your Savior. We will be leading our ecumenical retreat “Reflect, Renew, Reignite” twice on Wednesday October 23. A longer version will be held in the morning from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and again in the evening from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Oh my gourd, I can’t wait for October 23, because autumn (and really everyday) is the perfect time to be intentional about our relationship with the Good Lord. Sign up today!
