“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and saves the crushed in spirit.” Psalm 34:18

This verse was a part of today’s Mass psalm and it’s a comforting one. What a reassurance to know that God is aware of our heartbreaking experiences and crushed spirits.

We know that God is always near, but to know that He is particularly close to us when we are suffering...now, that’s good information to have and we need the reminder.

And it’s not just our own suffering, but the suffering of our neighbors, friends, family members, fellow parishioners and co-workers. And specifically in our case, because we happen to be in ministry work, Kristen and I are regularly learning about the particular crosses of our program attendees. While we view it as a blessing to be in a position to pray for these heartbroken souls, it’s still hard to see people go through so much sadness and personal tragedy.

But then there is the reminder of Psalm 34:18.

Perhaps, in your own suffering, you have felt that inner knowing that you are not alone, and that God will provide a way through this difficult season or situation or feeling or fact. But whether we’ve “felt” it or not, the truth remains. He promises to stay close.

And while it might be helpful if we can cooperate with that nearness by allowing ourselves to be loved, knowing that we don’t have to say any particular words, think any particular thoughts, or do any particular actions...all we really have to do is to accept His love and welcome His nearness.

And to be honest, we don’t even have to do that, because, even if we can’t accept His love or welcome His nearness, He is still there, holding us, all the same. Today I am again grateful for Psalm 34:18. It came fluttering out of the Mass like a warm blanket on a brisk autumn day. Thank you, Lord.
