Rushing to the front door after the mail lady’s delivery has become a new staple in our household. During this interesting time, we have relied on this tried and true form of communication like never before. Once the envelopes are in our hands, we throw bills aside and search for any sight of “fun mail!”
And when we find it, I kid you not, we have a skirmish over who gets to open it. Once the “opener” has been decided, we huddle together for the reading. Let me reiterate, this is not a joke or an embellishment. The fun mail so uplifts our spirits that we cling to this ritual. So allow me to take a moment to thank any and all of those people out there who have sent us “fun mail” from the start of COVID onward.
But this time of COVID and this little ritual has pointed us back to a ritual in the Catholic Church that is rarely discussed anymore and is certainly the most fun mail you could ever receive. The ritual I am referring to is that of the Spiritual Bouquet! For those of you who are hearing this term for the first time, a Spiritual Bouquet is a card that contains prayers that the giver prays for the recipient. Talk about putting the phrase, “I’ll pray for you” into action!
