It stopped me dead in my reading tracks! That one single paragraph at the bottom of page 60.
I was perusing Caryll Houselander’s book “The Reed of God” when I stumbled upon these words: “Sometimes it may seem to us that there is no purpose in our lives, that going day after day for years to this office or that school or factory is nothing else but waste and weariness. But it may be that God has sent us there because, but for us, Christ would not be there. If our being there means that Christ is there, that alone makes it worthwhile.”
“...but for us Christ would not be there.”
How many places have you frequented in the past week, month, year, where you were tempted to question the presence of God...where you could not see or feel or palpably sense God in your midst? You know, that time when you felt like there wasn’t one other God-loving person in your space!
But you were there...and if God lives in you...then, yes, God was there too, and you brought God into that circumstance!
It kind of reminds me of a walking tabernacle, as in, our body is carrying Christ to the world. And all because God resides in you.
And if God does reside in you then there is no need to feel glum about anything in your life that you consider to be mundane, boring, ordinary, lifeless, blasé or just okay. Imagine instead, that God has specifically sent you into this space because, if not for you, Christ would not be there.
P.S. Keep your walking tabernacle in pristine condition by bringing Luminous Ministries to your church, school, youth group, small faith sharing group, K of C, or young adult crowd via our “There’s Nothing Ordinary About Ordinary Time” or “Reflect, Renew, Reignite” retreat, and let it be said of you that your light shone in the dark and the dreary...the mundane and the minuscule...the blah and the bland! Your life has purpose in every circumstance! Go ahead and let that truth astound you!
