Blog Post #45: Rolling Those Beads

Rosary | Marian Devotion | Prayer | Our Blessed Mother

October 10, 2020 by Kristen (Kurivial) Hug

At the funeral of my great aunt, it was said, “she was always rolling those beads.” I had never heard the Rosary referenced in this way, but I loved the mental image.

Day after day, she would “roll those beads” and pray for her family and friends. What a legacy of faith to leave and an example for us all to emulate!

In the Catholic Church, October is the month dedicated to the Holy Rosary. Why is there an entire month dedicated to this prayer form? Because as many a saint and spiritual giant has said, it is THE weapon against the forces of evil.

If the Rosary is a non-violent weapon to bring about peace, love, and Godliness, why wouldn’t we always be “rolling those beads”?

For some, the repetition of Hail Marys becomes, well…too repetitive. But it was designed to be this way to truly allow the pray-er to meditate on each mystery of Jesus’ life. And this meditation not only has spiritual benefits of drawing closer to Jesus through His mother, but physical benefits too.

Did you know that reciting the Rosary: improves your breathing, boosts your immune system, increases your energy levels, fights chronic fatigue, and helps lower your blood pressure?

This is the prayer form that just keeps giving! But there are still others who shy away because of the “Hail Mary”. Some take issue with this prayer, but as Pope St. John Paul II said, “In the prayer we repeat many times the words that the Virgin Mary heard from the Archangel, and from her kinswoman Elizabeth.” That’s why the Rosary is also referred to as “the Bible on beads.” The “Hail Mary,” the “Our Father,” and all the mysteries of the Rosary come to us from Sacred Scripture.

So, if you are looking at the world and thinking you are in need of a spiritual weapon….if you are looking to grow closer to Jesus by meditating on His life…if you are needing that old blood pressure to go down a few ticks…and if you want to enter into an interactive experience with the Bible…then look up how to pray the Rosary and get started today! Let it be said of us that we, too, were always “rolling those beads”!
